Why are we going
The overall aim of the expedition is to show young people that you can achieve anything if you try! The trip is a motivational tool for not only those involved but those that can be reached through the lecture tour that the young people will take to Youth Clubs, watersports and activity centres across London on their return.
The expedition will also greatly benefit those directly involved by providing:
- Personal and social development
- Motivation and achievement
- Organisational, team work and communication skills
- Amazing cultural experiences, that they would otherwise not have
- The First Youth Descent of the Zanskar River, ever!
The young people involved all come from central London and live in wards that have the highest level of deprivation and unemployment in the country (such as Haggerston and Queensbridge in Hackney).
Some have never been out of the UK and some have disabilities that hamper their every day life (such as severe diabetes and behavioural problems).
As part of the Project all participants are required to be attending some form of education, to encourage attendance and promote academic development.
This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the young people involved to broaden their horizons both physically and metaphorically.
