We are seeking financial sponsorship for the first youth decent of the
Zanskar River in India (known as the 'Grand Canyon of India') by kayak
and raft support in August 2006. This expedition will consist of 15 days
out of the UK with 5 days spent in the gorge.
The expedition team will be made up of twelve inner-city young people (with a range of abilities, including some with disabilities), who come from some of the most socially and economically deprived Boroughs in London (i.e. Hackney and Tower Hamlets), along with three staff members and a support crew.
The expedition will be a serious challenge for all involved, and will take us to some of the most picturesque and remote areas of the Indian Himalayas. Not only will it be an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity for the young people, but we will also be using the trip as a motivational tool to inspire young people across London. The overall aim of the expedition is to show young people that you can achieve anything if you try!
The young people involved in the expedition will be raising the £24,000 needed for the trip to go, are involved in the logistics and organisation, will receive communication and presentation skills and watersports training and on return will produce a lecture tour that they will take to local Youth Clubs and watersports centres across London to show what they have achieved and to inspire other young people.
The publicity returns for any sponsorship given will be high. The expedition will be a much-documented affair, with articles in local and national papers and sport related press over the next 18 months (i.e. Guardian Travel, Hackney Gazette, CanoeKayak magazine etc.). Sponsors will also be highlighted on the lecture tour that the young people will take to clubs and centres across London on their return. We are also in talks with the Discovery Channel about a possibility of filming this adventure.
The trip is being organised by Laburnum Boat Club, a small children's charity based in South Hackney, London (registered charity number 801255) and is being led by three highly respected professionals:
- Beth Ettinger, Deputy Coordinator at Laburnum Boat Club
- Terry Kinsella, Paddlesports Manager at the West Reservoir Centre
- Matt Tidy, a British Canoe Union Level 5 coach and international competitor in extreme kayaking
All have been working in the outdoor industry for many years and are dedicated to the use of watersports as a tool to enhance the personal and social development of young people and help guide them back into education or employment.
