Basic Info

Dates
20th August - 2nd September 2007 (these are provisional, and will depend on the availability of internal flights)

Participants
12 young people and 3 staff

  • Beth Ettinger - Deputy Co-ordinator of Laburnum Boat Club and Level 4 kayak coach
  • Terry Kinsella - Head of Paddlesport at West Reservoir and Level 4 kayak coach
  • Matt Tidy - previous British Canoe Union Paddlesport Development Officer and Level 5 kayak coach

Logistics
We will be working with Aquaterra Adventures (www.treknraft.com), a well-established and highly recommended company based in Delhi, who will organise all transport, accommodation and food in India and will run the rafts on the river. Matt Tidy is currently in Ladakh on recognisance and will be meeting the guides from Aquaterra this month.

Itinerary
We will fly directly to Delhi as one large group then connect to an internal flight to Leh, where we will have a day to acclimatise. We will then travel by bus for 3 days (yes, 3days!) to Ladakh, where we will spend a few days doing warm-up paddles before spending 5 days descending the Zanskar gorge. See below for a more detailed itinerary.

Cost
£24,000!!! This will need to be raised by the participants.

Commitment
All participants will have to work hard to raise the money needed; this will be facilitated through compulsory monthly meetings. There will also be a compulsory 4-day training camp over the Easter school holidays. The trip itself will be extremely physically and mentally challenging. We expect most people to be sick at some point! However, it will be an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity for all involved!
